If you wonder why you would want to journey to one of the out islands near Mount Desert Island, you only have to look at the photo above. The main reason is the view! No other place gives you such an exceptional vantage point from which to enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of the mountains of Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park. Islesford is the main village on Little Cranberry Island, one of the five islands of Cranberry Isles, Maine, in Hancock County. There is a local water taxi that can take you there as well as other boat rental services you can take advantage of.
There is a small section of Islesford that is part of Acadia National Park and includes the Islesford Historical Museum (operated by the National Park Service). True to the area's boat building history, the museum has an interesting display of ship models, tools, and photographs that give a really good sense of what island life was like during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The museum was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Admission is free.
The Islesford Dock has a restaurant that provides seating inside and outside on the deck. The views alone are worth the visit to have a lunch here. Also, on the dock are some local artisans. The whole community has a very relaxed pace that is very appealing. Consider taking some time to walk around the community and absorb the special lifestyle that people have who summer or live here year round. Several artists take advantage of this. You have a sense that you have stepped inside of some New England novel of some kind while visiting.
