Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, and the surrounding towns and villages, have a wealth of options for you to consider during your stay in Maine. There is culture and nature, ocean excursions and scenic flights. There are lighthouses, tours, and festivals, restaurants, clubs, pubs, and breweries. There is recreation like biking, hiking, kayaking, and sailing or horse drawn carriage rides. Perhaps, all that is needed is a quiet spot next to the ocean. In all likelihood, within a few days of arriving here, you will already be planning your next visit just to fit in all the things you didn't get to do this time!
No matter who you are, or what type of person you may be, there is something here to enjoy. Maine coastal living is about being who you are without pretenses or excuses. Let your imagination run wild whether it is about getting up early before the crack of dawn or staying up late into the evening and night. After all, this time is your time. You earned it.
If you are the kind of person that likes to lay back and let someone else do the driving, consider going on some of the tours - both land based and sea based. There is a wealth of information to learn. Start right in Bar Harbor or venture outward. The Acadia National Park Visitor Center at Hulls Cove has a free 15 minute audiovisual program every half hour. There are also ranger-led activities available. You need not even drive since there is a free bus service available via the Island Explorer that makes regular (in season) stops to many locations on the island and off (see below).
If you are the type of person that wants to jump right in with both feet, get up before dawn and take a jog or bike ride on any of a variety of hiking trails or a carriage road. Or, make plans to go out on a whale watch or go to an out-island to experience small island living, see seals, or other wildlife. How about a scenic flight high above the island for a unique perspective or a free floating and quiet glider ride? If you have experience, rent a powerboat or sailboat from a variety of places on Mount Desert Island.
Whatever you choose to do, enjoy your time here. Make some good memories that will be with you and your family for a lifetime.
The Free Island Explorer Shuttle Bus Service makes regular stops (in season) at various locations on Mount Desert Island in the Park and villages, in Trenton, and at the Schoodic Peninsula section of Acadia National Park on the mainland. The Free Shuttle Bus also makes regular stops at the Bar Harbor Village Green.
